INTEGRATED SYSTEMS OF SOURCES, TECHNOLOGIES AND METHODS – REMOTE SENSING OF HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE (IntSYSTEM)

The Intensive program (IP) IntSYSTEM, within the Lifelong Learning Program Erasmus was held on the island of Rab from June the 1st to June the 15th 2014. The participants were students and professors from universities: Paris-Est Créteil, Blaise Pascal – Clermont-Ferrand, Padova and Zagreb.

At the same time, students were expected to be creative in their assignments that concern resolving problems on the topography of the Island of Rab from prehistory to the Renaissance period. Therefore, the result of this project should be published as a book with completely new results of the research.

Day 1 – 1/6/2014: arrival of the participants in the town of Rab, first meeting and determination of the work program.

Day 2 – 2/6/2014:

Morning lectures:

Silvia Milanezi: The Adriatic Sea: A Greek Sea?;

Nicolas Laubry: Epigraphic Evidence: Contexts and Functions of Inscriptions in the Roman Empire;

Afternoon lectures:

Miljenko Domijan: Rab – City of the Mithical Bell Towers;

Guided tour of the city of Rab under the guidance of professor M. Jurković and field lecture.

Day 3 – 3/6/2014:

Morning methodology lectures:

Gian Pietro Brogiolo: Detecting and interpreting landscape transformations (part 1; part 2; part 3; part 4 / Landscapes in the Adriatic islands;

Alexandra Chavarria: Studying residential architecture at Rab: from archaeology of buildings to archaeology of urbanism;

Discussion; students are organized into thematic groups according to their own wishes and methodological and scientific needs:

  1. epigraphical studies (professors – Silvia Milanezi, Nicolas Laubry (first week), Claire Sotinel, Laurent Lamoine (second week) and 6 students),
  2. sculpture study and drawing (supervising professor – Pascale Chevalier, team leader – Paolo Vedovetto and 4 students),
  3. topography and churches (supervising professor – Miljenko Jurković, team leader – Federico Giacomello and 5 students);
  4. wall stratigraphy (supervising professor – Gian Pietro Brogiolo, team leaders – Luana Vasapollo, Marta Bagnasco and 3 students),
  5. Rab residental architecture (supervising professor – Alexandra Chavarría, Neven Budak, Ognjen Čaldarović, team leader – Sonia Schivo and 8 students),
  6. landscape archaeology (supervising professor – Gian Pietro Brogiolo, team leader – Julia Sarabía, 14 students).

Afternoon: field work in groups.

Day 4 – 4/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening group meeting: preparing presentations of the first results of the group work.

Day 5 – 5/6/2014: field work in groups and preparing the presentations; afternoon activities: presentation of the first results of the research and continuation of the field work; evening meetings organized by team leaders.

Day 6 – 6/6/2014: boat tour around the island; reconnaissance of the archeological sites which can be approached by sea and photo documentation and layout of the sites; evening meetings organized by team leaders.

Day 7 – 7/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening group meetings.

Day 8 – 8/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening group meetings.

Day 9 – 9/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening group meetings.

Day 10 – 10/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening interdisciplinary plenary work.

Day 11 – 11/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening interdisciplinary plenary work.

Day 12 – 12/6/2014: whole day’s field work in groups; evening interdisciplinary plenary work.

Day 13 – 13/6/2014:

Morning lectures:

Neven Budak: Urban Development of Rab from Antiquity to Renaissance;

Dušan Mlacović: Rab in 14th century;

Ognjen Čaldarović: Urban Renewal and Transitional Society;

Afternoon: final presentations of accomplished work by team leaders.

Evening: individual work with supervisors.

Day 14 – 14/6/2014: final group works and the preparation of further individual student projects in their respective universities. Evening: individual work with supervisors.

Day 15 – 15/6/2014: departure of participants.
